Rich Cargill - The Tribute

It is with much sadness that Arbroath Artisan Golf Club and Arbroath Golf Links Management Committee and Staff learned of the death of Mr Rich Cargill, "The Legend" on April 8th 2007 after a brave battle against cancer.

Rich first became a member of Arbroath Artisan Golf Club & Arbroath Golf Links in 1949 and it wasn't long after that he won his first Junior Club Championship, and that was just the start of what was to become a long and illustrious amateur golfing career. Rich won the Club Championship no fewer than 9 times, he won the Links Championship on 13 occasions spanning 5 different decades, his last being in 1991. Rich was Angus County Match play Champion on 3 occasions, he also won numerous Open competitions and match play events throughout Angus and indeed the British Isles. To add to Rich's remarkable achievements he also appeared in no less than 3 British Open's.

All of these honours, combined with the fact that he was a true gentleman both on and off the golf course, meant that Rich had been a role model and an inspiration to many golfers. Rich also spent much of his free time coaching Arbroath's junior members both on and off the course and was always willing to offer advice and guidance to anyone who asked.

As indicated earlier Rich was a true gentleman when it came to the game he loved, and if you were fortunate to be at the first tee when Rich appeared with a space in his party he would always invite you to join them, no matter what your golfing ability was. You could also be assured that throughout your round he would always be willing to offer you the odd tip to improve your own game. The offer of playing golf with Rich was not one that you should have let pass you by.

The other beauty about playing golf with the legend was reaching the 19th hole, this is where a few hours could pass in a matter of moments if the conversation turned to Rich's golfing past.  He always had the ability to tell a humorous story about the people he had met and played with while playing the sport he loved and made look so easy.

Rich is survived by his wife Jean and members of their extended family, most of whom are all keen golfers and can often be found on Arbroath Links or in the Clubhouse where Rich spent many happy hours of his life from his childhood until shortly before his death.

Rich may be gone but “The Legend” will live forever.                                                    <<< Back to the Legend
